Introduction
ealth systems worldwide are confronted with an increased demand for quality health services, an aging population, a variety of health risks, and limited resources. Key stakeholders, including academic institutions and health services, are seeking a common vision for a more efficient and equitable health sector. Health educators have now to prepare graduates for this new context by training them in multi-professional healthcare settings at the community level, if they are to fulfill their social mission to achieve Universal Health.
Transformative education seeks to ensure the sustainable expansion and reform of health professions education and training to increase the quantity, quality and relevance of health personnel and, in doing so, strengthen national health systems, expand access to quality healthcare, and improve health outcomes, particularly among the most marginalized and vulnerable populations. Over the years, a number of institutions - including WHO/PAHO- have promoted or implemented social accountability principles to guide health professions education and training to support health systems moving towards Universal Health.
The creation of a multi-country network focused on mentoring, coaching and sharing of best practices on social accountability with the combined participation of health and education sectors –including academic institutions- is key to advance the transformative education agenda in the Region of the Americas.
